Pirates of Atlantis: Connections
We’ve got something new for 5th Edition DnD and the 13th Age roleplaying game: Pirates of Atlantis! Kickstarting in September.
In this upcoming adventure and source book, we wanted to give the players and Game Master tools to tie character stories to both the adventure and each other. One of the ways we support this is connections. When the players create their characters, they also create connections.
Connection to the Adventure
Players are given a list of suggested connections to the adventure and can choose one, roll randomly on the list, combine a few of them, or make their own with the assistance of their Game Master. Connections include:
My family is descended from the survivors of Atlantis. We had a collection of Atlantean antiques passed down from generation to generation. One dark night brigands forced their way into our house, kidnapped members of my family, and took our heirlooms. The leader was the pirate captain Fangos. I need to rescue my family.
I was a crew member on the pirate ship Quicksilver. When the first mate, Fangos, mutinied, I was marooned on Earthforge Isle with the former captain, Captain Olas. The captain died of his wounds, but I survived and eventually found my way to Mistport.
I’m a bit obsessed with the legends of Atlantis. I’m always looking for Atlantean ruins to explore and new bits of lore about the people who thought they could challenge the gods, and then were brought down.
Connection to other PCs
Also at character creation, going around the table, each player makes a connection with the characters played by the players to their left and right. Both players should agree with the connection. If they disagree, choose another connection.
Again, they can pick, roll from a list, or create custom connections with the help of the Game Master. Connections include:
·We have the same connection to the adventure and know each other from that connection.
We are family. Siblings, cousins, adopted or blood. Family connections makes for great storytelling.
Happy family, great relationship between us.
Terrible family, but still a great relationship.
Happy family, except for our relationship.
Terrible family, what do you expect but a messed-up relationship.
The house I grew up in had an Atlantean statue that looked just like this other PC.
